Renal transplantation procedure can be categorized into two categories: Surgical removal and Nephrectomy. The surgical procedure is done to remove the unhealthy kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor.
Kidney might come from a deceased person or a healthy living person, could be a friend, family member or any person with a matched kidney and able to donate. In surgery, the kidney(s) are not removed, the new kidney is implanted in the lower abdomen cavity.
Usually, a person needs one kidney to live a healthy life but in rarer cases, a person might require both of the kidneys from a deceased person. The donor and recipient both can live a healthful life with one healthy kidney.
